"Ofuro" / "Furo" Defined...

"Ofuro" / "Furo" Defined...

Whilst not personally Japanese, many aspects of their culture, traditional objects and general craftsmanship have somewhat captured me. An example of which... the Ofuro.

I do also have a half Japanese step-son which may influence me :) Anyway...

The Japanese words "Furo" and "Ofuro" are all but interchangeable, Ofuro being the polite way of saying Furo.

These words translate to English as "Bathtub" or "Japanese Bath".

These baths are conventionally made of timber, have steep sides and are very short when compared to a modern western bath.

Traditionally not for washing, they are part of ancient ritual, a place to relax and warm one’s self.

Like “Onsen”, Ofuro are something that inspires many of our products. Whilst we may take a modern approach to their design and construction, we hope the soul of Ofuro remain true in what we produce.
