The Japanese word “Onsen” is normally translated as “Hot Spring” in English. It can however, describe hot baths and facilities built around hot springs themselves.
Being a volcanic rich environment, Japan has many Onsen scattered throughout the country... where mineral rich waters are geothermally heated creating a natural “spa bath” of sorts.
edit: The word “spa bath” does give somewhat of a negative connotation when compared to the history and ritual involved with Onsen and the Japanese culture... this comparison is purely a physical one.
It is widely believed that Onsen have healing and therapeutic properties... giving further mystique to these outdoor organic baths and pools.
It is in the spirit of the Onsen that inspires our bathroom designs, our bathtubs and even our basins and vanities. Although many of our products do take on a contemporary approach, we aim to evoke the thought and feel of these natural wonders and the associated historic building materials and techniques.
